The Blood Transfusion Administration Services (BTAS), under the Ministry of Health – Kuwait, is a central non-profit governmental entity that provides comprehensive blood and cellular therapy services nationwide. Established in 1970, BTAS has evolved into a regional leader in safe blood transfusion and advanced laboratory practices, proudly marking 60 years of service since the establishment of Kuwait's first blood bank in 1965.


Key Achievements:

First blood bank in the Middle East (est. 1965) and the first to stop blood importation by achieving self-sufficiency.

Accredited by AABB (American Association of Blood Banks) since 1989, and recognized as an International Reference Laboratory (IRL-AABB) in 2014.

Pioneered advanced screening techniques in the region, including NAT testing for HIV, HBV, and HCV.

Played a crucial role during crises, including the 1990 Gulf War, 2015 Imam Al-Sadiq Mosque bombing, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Services:

Provision of safe blood and components to all governmental and private hospitals in Kuwait.

Therapeutic procedures such as therapeutic phlebotomy, apheresis, and rare blood supply to neighboring countries when required.

Public awareness campaigns promoting voluntary blood donation, supported by mobile donation units.

Subsidiary Blood Banks in the state of Kuwait:

Blood bank branch in Al-jahra hospital

Opened in 1986, It is located near the western borders of the State of Kuwait and serves Al-jahra Governorate and part of Al-Asma Governorate with bed capacity 5 beds, the total donation was5158 units in 2023.

Cooperative Center for Blood Transfusion - Al-Adan

In 1986 a branch of the blood bank was opened in Al-Adan Hospital, which is located near the southern border of the State of Kuwait, where it provided blood and its derivatives to the governorates of Ahmadi and Farwaniya and their suburbs, and in 2020 the Cooperative Center for Blood Transfusion was opened next to Al-Adan Hospital as an alternative to The old branch has a bed capacity of 14, and the total number of blood bags that were donated in the year 2023 was 8798 blood units.

Cooperative Center for Blood Transfusion - Al-Adan

Opened in 2013, It is the Al-Smoud Ninth camp and serves the military sector in Kuwait capacity 6 beds.

Blood Bank branch in Hamad Al-Humidi and Shaeikha Al-Sdirawi clinic

Opened in 2016, It is the middle of Al-asma Governorate, with bed capacity 3 beds, the total donation was 242 units in 2023.

Blood Bank branch in Dr. Al-Abderazaq (Chest hospital):

Opened in 2018, It is in Al-Sabah Medical Area, serves Al-sabah medical, with bed capacity 8 beds, the total donation was 1278 units in 2023

Blood Bank branch in Jaber Hospital:

Opened in December 2022, it is located in the South Surra area, serves the South Surra area with a bed capacity of 6 beds, Work was temporarily suspended during the Corona pandemic and then restarted in December 2022. The total number of blood bags donated in 2023 reached 883 blood bags.

Blood Bank branch in Sheikha Salwa Al-Sabah Center for Stem Cells and Cord Blood:

Opened in 2019, Next to the Maternity hospital, with bed capacity 11 beds, The total donation was 116 units in 2023

Blood bank branch in Farwaniya Hospital:

It opened in December 2020, provides blood for Farwaniya Governorate and its suburbs, with a clinical capacity of 4, and the total number of blood bags that were donated during the month of December 2023 was 2984 blood units.
